Liv Tyler was born July 1, 1977, in Portland, Maine. Her unique first name can be traced after her mother, model and former rock groupie Bebe Buell, saw Liv Ullmann on the cover of a TV Guide the week Liv was born. As for the roots of her last name, Liv always believed that her father was musician Todd Rundgren, who her mother had a long-term relationship with and who helped raise her.

Although her birth certificate stated that Rundgren was indeed her father, a 10-year-old Liv became suspicious after meeting Aerosmith's Steven Tyler at a Rundgren concert, and even more suspicious after seeing Tyler's daughter Mia, who could have passed for Liv's twin, at an Aerosmith concert.

Liv confronted her mother about the topic, and her mother told her the truth: Steven Tyler was her father (Liv was the product of an 8-month relationship between Tyler and Buell).

Liv made her biological father's name her own at the age of 12, and 2 years later, mother and daughter headed to New York. While Liv grew into a statuesque, blue-eyed beauty (she had her father's unmistakable pouty, Mick Jagger-like lips), she claims she was chubby and awkward while growing up.

But family friend Paulina Porizkova saw the beauty in Liv (as does everyone today), and encouraged her to start modeling. Indeed Liv did, and soon appeared in magazines such as Seventeen, YM and Mirabella.

After achieving superstardom throughout Latin America, Colombian-born Shakira became Latin pop's biggest female crossover artist since Jennifer Lopez broke down the doors to English-language success. Noted for her aggressive, rock-influenced approach, Shakira maintained an extraordinary degree of creative control over her music, especially for a female artist; she wrote or co-wrote nearly all of her own material, and in the process gained a reputation as one of Latin music's most ambitiously poetic lyricists. When she released her first English material in late 2001, she became an instant pop sensation, thanks to her quirky poetic sense and a sexy video image built on her hip-shaking belly-dance moves.

Shakira Mebarak (full name: Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll) was born February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia, into a poor family. Her mother was a native Colombian and her father was of Lebanese descent, and so as a child Shakira soaked up music from both cultures; she also listened heavily to English-language rock & roll, listing her favorite bands in later interviews as Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, the Police, the Cure, and Nirvana. Seeking to build on her success, Shakira signed Emilio Estefan -- Gloria's husband and a highly successful music-biz insider -- as her manager and producer. The move paid off when her follow-up album, 1998's Dónde Están los Ladrones? (Where Are the Thieves?), became an even bigger worldwide hit than its predecessor. What was more, it cracked the lucrative U.S. market wide open, spending 11 weeks at number one on Billboard's Latin album chart and producing two U.S. number ones (on the Latin chart) with "Ciega, Sordomuda" and "Tu." When Gloria Estefan offered to translate "Ojos Así" into English, the prospect of a crossover suddenly seemed tangible, and Shakira decided that the most effective way to maintain control over her material was to learn English well enough to write in it herself. In the meantime, she set the stage for her crossover bid with a performance on MTV Unplugged; the channel's first Spanish-language broadcast. MTV Unplugged was released as an album in early 2000, and topped the Latin charts for two weeks on its way to becoming her third straight platinum album; it also won a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. At the inaugural Latin Grammy Awards ceremony in 2000, Shakira delivered a much-discussed, show-stopping performance of "Ojos Así," and took home Unplugged-related trophies for Best Female Pop Vocal ("Ojos Así") and Best Female Rock Vocal ("Octavo Dia").

Mainstream pop stardom beckoned. Shakira dyed her long brown hair blonde, romanced Antonio de la Rua (son of the former president of Argentina), and went to work on her first (mostly) English-language album, Laundry Service. The single/video "Whenever, Wherever" was released in advance of the album in late 2001, and made her a star in the English-speaking world almost overnight. Laundry Service entered the American pop charts at number three, and "Whenever, Wherever" climbed into the Top Ten of the singles chart, peaking at number six. The follow-up "Underneath Your Clothes" also hit the Top Ten, halting at number nine; less than a year after its release, Laundry Service had gone triple platinum. Reviews of Laundry Service were divided as to the effectiveness of Shakira's English lyrics, but nearly all agreed on her unique poetic imagery.

Extensive touring to support Laundry Service lead to a long break for the singer, so a remix collection (2002's Laundry Service: Washed and Dried) and a live album (2004's Live & Off the Record) appeared in lieu of a new album. Revitalized, Shakira began the writing process for her next release and soon had 60 songs ready to go, some in English, some in Spanish. Milla Jovovich (Serbian: Милица Јововић/Milica Jovović, Ukrainian: Мілла Йовович/Mіlla Jovovič) (born Milica Nataša Jovović on December 17, 1975) is an American supermodel, actress, musician, singer, and fashion designer. Jovovich has been described by Paul W.S. Anderson, director of her film Resident Evil, as a "rare combination of a good actress who could kick ass and look beautiful doing it." Music channel VH1 has referred to her as the "reigning queen of kick-butt".

Family and early life

Jovovich (pronounced "Yo-vo-vitch" (/ˈjɔvɔviʧ/ in IPA)) was born in Kiev, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union to Bogdan Jovović, a Serbian medical doctor, and Galina Jovovich (Galina Logivina), a Soviet actress. Her paternal family's estate was at Metohija in Zlopek near Peć. Her paternal great-grandfather, Bogić Camić Jovović, was a flag-bearer of the Montenegrin Serb Vasojevići clan and officer of the guard of the King Nicholas I of Montenegro; his wife's name was Milica. Her paternal grandfather, Bogdan Jovović, was a commander in the Pristina military area, and later investigated finances in military areas of Skopje and Sarajevo, where he uncovered massive gold embezzlement. He was punished for refusing to convict his friend for the crime. Later, the communist government imprisoned him on Goli Otok. When he feared that he could be arrested again, he escaped to Albania and later moved to Kiev. Another version of the story claims that he was the one to have taken the gold. Milla's father, Bogić Jovović, later joined her grandfather in Kiev, where he and his sister graduated in medicine.

In 1981, when Milla was five years old, her family had to leave the Soviet Union for political reasons and move to London; they subsequently lived in Sacramento, California, USA. Seven months later, they settled in Los Angeles, California. She also has a brother named Marco Jovovich born in 1988.

Career

Modeling

At the age of eleven, Jovovich was spotted by the photographer Richard Avedon, who featured her in Revlon's "Most Unforgettable Women in the World" advertisements. In October 1987, she was featured on the cover of the Italian fashion magazine Lei, which was the first of her many cover shoots. In 1988, she also made her first professional model contract. Later she made it to the cover of The Face, which led to new contracts and covers of the Vogue and Cosmopolitan.

Jovovich is also an "international spokesmodel" for L'Oreal cosmetics and was the highest paid supermodel in 2004. In 2006 Jovovich was picked up by Spanish clothing line Mango as their new spokesmodel and is currently featured in ads for Etro. Mango told Vogue.com that Jovovich is "the image of the woman that wish to dress: a very modern woman, with personality and self-confidence". She has said that she enjoys having both a modelling and an acting career, and that she is "very grateful for looks", which allow her to "make really great film choices".

Acting

Milla's mother was directing her in her artistic career, by signing her up to an actors' school in California; she finished as the best pupil, as she did in the ballet school. She continued to act and in 1988, appeared in her first film role, the romance thriller Two Moon Junction. In 1991, Jovovich had a starring role in the romance adventure sequel Return to the Blue Lagoon, opposite Brian Krause, which led to comparisons between her and child model-turned-actress, Brooke Shields (who had starred in the original Blue Lagoon). For her role, she was nominated for both 'Best Young Actress Starring in a Motion Picture' in the 1991 Young Artist Awards, and 'Worst New Star' in the 1991 Golden Raspberry Awards. Most of Jovovich's film appearances during the late 1980s and early 1990s were in supporting or cameo roles in shows such as Married with Children. Personal life

Jovovich married actor Shawn Andrews (played Pickford) in October of 1992, while filming Dazed and Confused together; the marriage was annulled by her mother a month later. She married The Fifth Element director Luc Besson in 1997, but the two divorced in 1999. Jovovich also dated Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante for several months in 2000 and was linked to actor Stephen Dorff. She also had a relationship with Jamiroquai ex-bassist Stuart Zender, during which time they both lived in London. Most recently she has appeared in public with Japanese soccer star Hidetoshi Nakata, but is purported to be engaged to writer/director Paul W. S. Anderson. She is pregnant with Paul W.S. Anderson's child; a girl, expected in November 2007. The couple has stated that they "would love to, but maybe after the baby."

Jovovich is also planning to publish her private diaries as an autobiography. Jovovich says, "I've been keeping a diary ever since I was a little girl. I've written about all the places I've been to and all the mad things that I've done, so it would be good to get it all into a book - like an autobiography, but with more of a diary feel to it. I'm not sure how interested anyone would be in publishing it, or reading it, for that matter."

Jovovich is a polyglot - she fluently speaks Russian, French, English and Serbian (possibly to a lesser extent).

Penélope Cruz Sánchez (pronounced [peˈnelope kɾuθ ˈsantʃeθ]) (born April 28, 1974, in Madrid, Spain), better known as Penélope Cruz, is a Golden Globe- and Academy Award-nominated Spanish actress. Originally a dancer, she soon moved into Spanish television, and since then she has appeared in a string of films in Spanish, English, French and Italian.

Early life

Cruz was born in San Sebastián de los Reyes, Madrid, Spain. Her parents are Eduardo Cruz, a retailer, and Encarna Sánchez, a hairdresser. As a toddler, she was already a compulsive performer, re-enacting TV commercials for her family's amusement, but she decided to focus her energies on dance. After studying classical ballet for nine years at Spain's National Conservatory, she continued her training under a series of prominent dancers. At 15, however, she followed another calling after she bested more than 300 other girls at a talent agency audition. She received three years of Spanish Ballet training with Ángela Garrido. She also had jazz dance training with Raúl Caballero and she studied at Cristina Rota (mother of Juan Diego Botto) school in Madrid. She speaks Spanish, English, French, and Italian fluently.

Career

Cruz first achieved fame when she appeared in the video clip La fuerza del destino for the Spanish synthpop group Mecano. She later started a relationship with Nacho Cano, a member of the group.

She was a TV presenter for the teen-oriented program La Quinta Marcha. She also had early exposure in Série Rose, a French erotic TV serial in which she played the role of a blind prostitute. She also directed Nacho Cano's video of "El waltz de los locos", in 1994.

Cruz's first major films were Jamón, jamón and Belle Epoque, a film which won an Academy Award for Foreign Language Film.

In 1997, she starred as Sofía Pangia, alongside Eduardo Noriega in Abre los ojos, directed by Alejandro Amenábar, and in 2000 she appeared with Matt Damon in All the Pretty Horses. In 1999, she appeared in Pedro Almodóvar's Todo sobre mi madre, which won an Academy Award for Foreign Language Film.

In early 2001, she appeared in the film Vanilla Sky, the Hollywood remake of Abre los ojos. She played the same role in both films.

In 2006, Cruz received highly favourable reviews for her performance in Pedro Almodóvar's Volver. She won a Best Actress ensemble award at the Cannes Film Festival and has been nominated for an Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award and BAFTA Award. She is the first Spanish Actress to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role.

In May, 2007, it was announced that Penelope and her sister Monica would be designing a 25-piece collection for the Barcelona-based fashion chain, Mango.

Personal life

Cruz has a younger brother, Eduardo, a singer, and a younger sister Mónica, who closely resembles her: a similarity exploited for some Spanish TV ads. In the 2000s, Mónica left her dancing career and achieved note on her own in the youth-oriented TV series Un Paso Adelante.

Cruz claims to be a vegetarian since 2000, though this fact is disputed. She speaks four languages: Spanish, Italian, French and English. Cruz has also donated a considerable amount of money and time to charity. In 1997 she volunteered in Uganda for two months.

After appearing in 2001 in the film Vanilla Sky with Tom Cruise, they had a three-year relationship. They split up in January 2004.

After filming Sahara in February 2005, she started dating actor Matthew McConaughey. In May 2006, they released a joint statement to People, saying that they "have decided to take time off as a couple. Later that year they announced that they were "no longer intimate and separating was the best thing to do at this time."

Cruz had a short-term relationship with actor Orlando Bloom in 2006.

It has been rumored that she's currently dating rocker Lenny Kravitz.

Cruz is a close friend of actress Salma Hayek. The two co-starred in the 2006 film, Bandidas, she's a close friend of the colombian singer Shakira.

In April 2007 Cruz, who is now single, stated that she would like to have children one day and she feels the need to adopt. "Of course I want to have kids," Cruz, 32, tells the Spanish edition of Marie Claire in its April issue. "I want to have my own kids, but also adopt. For a while I've had the feeling that my life won't be complete if I don't adopt."

Kylie Ann Minogue was born on May 28, 1968, in Melbourne, Australia. The sister of Dannii Minogue (of Young Talent Time fame), young Kylie went to audition for The Sullivans and landed the role of Carla.

Blondes are the new pariahs. The misfits of society.

The big Sun Media sex survey this week has them trailing brunettes and even black-tops in sex appeal.

Even more shocking, Men's Health magazine tells me 75% of men would rather wake up with a brunette than with a blond.

"Good grief," says the blond with whom I usually wake up. "Do something about this. Write something."

So I start with ontario-blondes.com. Strawberry blond Sheila McNevan is the director.

I reach her at home near Peterborough.

Say, Sheila, how many blondes in Ontario?

"Oh, about 10,000."

That's all? Maybe the surveys are right.

What's new with blondes, Sheila?

"Well, we had our big Cream of the Crop sale last Saturday at Hoard's Station near Campbellford."

A sale? That's weird. You people sell blondes?!

"Just your better blondes. Not your lower end ones."

I wish I'd known. What makes a top blond?

"They're very lean. And blondes are known for their docility. Nice and quiet and easy to handle."

Not in my experience. Anyway, how many blondes did they sell on Saturday?

"About 100 of them. Best price was about $3,500."

That's a bargain. Maybe Paris Hilton has brought the price down.

So, what does one look for when buying a blond?

"Well, the men usually talk about nice legs, good hips, a good back so they don't slouch.

Oh, don't start with the cattle thing, Johnny.

"At least 70% of the women who come into my salon want to be blond"

He thinks a minute. "At least the ones 35 and up.

"The reverse is true under 35. They want brunette. That's the trend right now."

For one thing, brunette hair colouring is easier on your follicles than platinum blond.

Besides, says Johnny, evolution will make true blondes extinct in a few decades.

Imagine, in the year 2107, the World Blond Museum.

Exhibits honouring Marilyn, Mae West, Diana, Jean Harlow, Barbie, Nick Nolte, Anna Kournikova, Eminem, Sharon Stone, Redford, Gwyneth, Dolph Lundgren, Sweden, Reese Witherspoon ...

Fear not, though. Blondes, real or otherwise, aren't going anywhere.

Those survey results look mighty suspicious to me. I bet respondents were being politically correct. I don't believe 75% of men want to wake up with a brunette, not a blond.

Shilpa Shetty (Tulu: ಶಿಲ್ಪ ಶೆಟ್ಟಿ) (born 8 June 1975 in Tamil Nadu, India) is a four-time Filmfare Award-nominated Indian film actress and model. Since making her debut in the film Baazigar (1993), she has appeared in nearly 50 films, her first leading role being in 1994 in Aag. She resides at the centre of the Hindi-language film industry in Mumbai, India. Her younger sister Shamita Shetty is also a Bollywood film actress.

Shilpa was crowned the winner of the British Celebrity Big Brother on 28 January 2007 with 63% of the final vote, after an international racism controversy involving her and fellow contestants Jade Goody, Jo O'Meara and Danielle Lloyd. Shetty has now been estimated in recent polls as one of richest celebrities to date. She has an estimated net worth of £236 Million.

Biography

Shilpa Shetty was born in a strict and traditional close-knit family that hails from the matrilineal Bunt community of Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka although she was born in Mangalore. She is the eldest daughter of Surendra and Sunanda Shetty, manufacturers of tamper-proof caps for the pharmaceutical industry, and her native language is Tulu although she can speak nearly ten other languages at differing levels including English, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu, Tamil, Urdu and basic French. One of her nicknames is "Silly Pooh".

She attended St. Anthony Girls' High School, located in Chembur, and later attended Podar College. She is a trained Bharatanatyam dancer. She is also into sports and was the captain of the baseball team in school and earned a black belt in Karate and currently a dancesport expert and enthusiast.

Shetty started her career by modelling for Limca in 1991 at age 16, and made her film debut in 1993 with Baazigar, portraying a woman murdered by her psychopathic boyfriend. Although she was a supporting actress alongside Shahrukh Khan and Kajol, the film was a major success and earned her a nomination for Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award.

Celebrity Big Brother 2007

Shetty was a contestant in and the winner of Celebrity Big Brother UK. and is the first Indian celebrity included in the Celebrity version. Reportedly paid Rs.31.5m (£367,500 GBP) for her participation, she said to presenter Davina McCall, "I just want every Indian to be extremely proud that I'm in here". As for her participation, she stated: "I have zero expectations. The only thing I really hope to keep is my self-respect and my dignity." Sister Shamita told the Times of India that this "is the boldest decision Shilpa has taken hitherto." The Scotsman reported that PETA backed Shetty to win the contest and urged British viewers to vote for her.

During her time, Shetty instructed fellow housemates Carole Malone and Ken Russell in meditation, flirted with Dirk Benedict but tempers started to fray by Day 7 as a clique formed in the house disapproving of Shilpa's presence. Following a worldwide controversy that publicised her as a target of racist bullying (see below) within the house, Shetty won the contest after gaining 63% of the public vote and described the experience as "incredible and overwhelming". She further thanked the public for "a fantastic opportunity to make my country proud".

Post Celebrity Big Brother

In February 2007, Shetty attended a reception at the House of Commons, by invitation of Keith Vaz MP to meet with then-British prime minister Tony Blair. She was also invited to meet with Queen Elizabeth II at Marlborough House in London in March 2007. During an interview on This Morning, Shetty confirmed that she had been asked to take the role of Preeti Choraria's sister in EastEnders. Shilpa said that after much thought she would be unable to take the role as it would mean all her other arrangements would have to go on hold.

She was also the subject of a Sky One documentary entitled "The Real Shilpa Shetty", which was produced by British television production company Twofour. The large number of commercial offers that Shilpa received after winning Celebrity Big Brother themselves became reason for controversy with an increasing number of accusations about her riding the 'racism' wave to commercial gain. She was on the cover of the first issue of OK! Magazine to be sold in India.

As well as modeling and acting, Shetty has associated herself with several other commercial and non-profit organizations.

HIV-AIDS

In February 2006 Shetty lent her support to a BBC World Service Trust television show designed to tackle the problem of HIV-AIDS in India. The project, which also involved other celebrities Vivek Oberoi, Dia Mirza, and Raveena Tandon in separate episodes, featured Shetty as she shadowed a young achiever whose work involved raising awareness about the condition. "I have participated to show my solidarity to people living with HIV-Aids. I will do anything for them to feel wanted and special," she said.

PETA

In March 2006 various sources reported Shetty's joining PETA as part of an advertising campaign against the use of wild animals in circuses. According to a PETA India press release, Shetty is a long-time PETA supporter and has assisted the campaign by posing for photographs in a figure-hugging tiger costume. She explained that her crouching in a cage was uncomfortable during the photoshoot, but that her discomfort was insignificant compared to the pain suffered by the creatures. "These once dignified animals only leave their cages, which are barely larger than the size of their bodies, for a few minutes each day to be forced into the ring to perform tricks which make no sense and are upsetting to them. The best way to help animals suffering in circuses is to boycott the circus".

In a May 2006 press conference, it was announced that Shetty would be the brand ambassador of Romanov Vodka. Sami Lala, President of United Spirits, said that Shetty was chosen for her status as an "aspirational icon", and that her "innate style, energy and attitude highlight the core attributes of the brand.

Personal life

Shetty is a frequent subject of speculation regarding romance. However, she has remained tight-lipped whenever questions of marriage are posed to her. Her previous relationships include an affair with actor Akshay Kumar, whom she met on the Main Khiladi Tu Anari set in 1994. The couple split in 2000 after he started dating Shetty's friend and fellow actress Twinkle Khanna after a previous indiscretion, and which led to Shetty's successful suing of Stardust magazine for publishing a "damaging" report about the affair.

Shetty has been the subject of several controversies.

Mafia links

In May 2003 a controversy erupted over alleged links between Shetty's parents and the Indian underworld. The Surat police issued arrest warrants against her parents on charges of extortion. Police Commissioner of Surat, D.K. Gupta, told the media that the owners of Praful Sarees had lodged complaints with them after claiming to receive threatening telephone calls from Mumbai-based underworld figures asking for money on behalf of the Shettys. The dispute between the two parties related to a 1998 modelling assignment where Shilpa endorsed Praful Sarees and had only been paid Rs. 50 lakhs (over $113,000) out of a contractually-agreed agreed 3 crores ($679,000). Agarwal claimed that the full sum had been paid in advance, but he had no knowledge of how much had been paid to Shilpa. Surendra Shetty was refused bail by a Mumbai court although bail was granted to Sunanda, as she had been travelling abroad at the time the warrant was issued. The police further claimed to possess a record of a telephone call between Shilpa's parents and Pankaj Agarwal, the owner of Praful Sarees. This was denied by the parents and the tape was claimed to have been "manipulated".

On April 15, 2007, Shetty was kissed several times in jest on the cheek by Richard Gere during an AIDS-awareness event. The pair had appeared at a press conference in New Delhi as part of a campaign to preach safe sex to truck drivers in India and promotion of AIDS awareness. The kiss prompted protesters, allegedly members of the right-wing Hindu nationalist group Shiv Sena, to beat burning effigies of Gere with sticks. Others set fire to glamour shots of Shetty. People demanded an apology from her and threatened to ban her movies in the state. Shiv Sena leaders denied involvement in the protests, but Shiv Sena member of parliament Sanjay Raut observed that that protests are "just a manifestation of the anger of the general public" and that there was "nothing wrong with expressing contempt at such an act"

Similar protests broke out in other cities, including Varanasi, Hinduism's holiest city, and in the northern town of Meerut, where crowds of hundreds of thousands chanted "Down with Shilpa Shetty!" Star News Office was also attacked. The protests did not take any violent turn and the situation was quickly brought under control with some activists being detained.

Shetty responded to these protests by saying "I understand this (kissing) is his (Gere's) culture, not ours. But this was not such a big thing or so obscene for people to overreact in such a manner. I understand people's sentiments, but I don't want a foreigner to take bad memories from here."

On April 26, 2007 an Indian court in Rajasthan issued a warrant for Shetty and Gere's arrest.

The legal action against both Shetty and Gere has been suspended by the Indian Supreme Court until the court decides on the case's proper jurisdiction. Gere has since expressed regret for causing any offense and Shetty has stated: "so much has been blown out of proportion".

Sarah Nicole Harding (born 17 November 1981, in Ascot) is an English singer in the girl group Girls Aloud, and model. Harding grew up as a Catholic in Poynton, Stockport, Greater Manchester, England, and is the oldest member of Girls Aloud.

Early career

Harding attended Hazel Grove High School and Stockport College, she worked as part of the promotions team for 2 nightclubs in The Grand Central Leisure Park in Stockport. Harding was also a regular singer at Karaoke nights in the Whistling Jig, Puss and Boots pub as well as many others and did some vocals for Project G on some unreleased tracks. Project G was a band for which Harding provided backing vocals, long before Girls Aloud came along. She did some photoshoots for promotion but no album, nor known singles exist. Some tracks that have leaked onto the internet include "Searching" and "Don't Wanna Be Alone". Whilst working as a waitress and barmaid in Manchester, she entered the UK talent-search show Popstars: The Rivals.

Harding also entered FHM's High Street Honeys, the magazine's national beauty contest, and her pictures appeared in the first Top 100, but she later withdrew, upon achieving success on Popstars. A year later, she was voted one of the Top 30 sexiest women in the world, by readers of the same magazine. In 2005, she entered the same Top 10 at Number 8, slipping to Number 15 in 2006, and to Number 17 in 2007.

Girls Aloud

In the finale of the "Popstars" show, she was picked as the final member of the five-piece group, Girls Aloud, that formed the female half of the eponymous 'rivals'. She defeated Javine Hylton for the final place, in a result that provoked a measure of surprise and controversy.

As a member of Girls Aloud, Harding has taken part in many events and TV shows, such as the August 25, 2006 episode of The Friday Night Project. Sarah co-hosted the show with Cheryl Cole and Kimberley Walsh. During her time with the group she has co-written numerous songs, including "Hear Me Out", which appeared on the group's second album What Will The Neighbours Say?. She's also credited as one of the writers of "Why Do It?", the b-side for "I Think We're Alone Now" single.

Harding has filmed a cameo appearance in a British independent film called Bad Day, due for release in 2007. She plays a brunette girl called Jade Jennings who sits in the back of a cab and swears down the phone. The film also stars Donna Air and Claire Goose.

Harding has recently been seen as the face of Coke Zero, upon its launch in Ireland. She will also advertise and promote Sunsilk with the rest of Girls Aloud.

Personal life

Harding once blagged a first-class flight to Dubai with good friend Danielle Lloyd. They later fell out when Lloyd became more serious with her boyfriend Teddy Sheringham. Harding stated this in an interview with OK! magazine saying that she and Lloyd "drifted apart."

Harding's love-life has been in constant speculation since becoming famous. She met her ex-boyfriend Mikey Green on Popstars: The Rivals, who went on to become a member of the boyband Phixx. After going out for two years, they split up, got back together, and then broke up again. She was also linked to Liverpool F.C. footballer John Arne Riise and the actor Stephen Dorff, a rumour denied by Sarah during a short interview on BBC Radio 1 with JK & Joel on July 13, 2006. Early life

The show, hosted by Charlotte and featuring two celebrity guests each week, involves a mixture of sketches, reality TV, interviews and music, as well as a recurring Welsh theme (the first show included a Wales vs. the World competition and a Welsh remake of Will & Grace). Early life

Biel was born in Ely, Minnesota to Jonathan Edward Biel, an entrepreneur, and Kimberly Conroe. Rise to fame (1996 - 2002)

Jessica's film career also began at age 15 when she played alongside Peter Fonda in his Golden Globe winning performance in Ulee's Gold (1997). She has also had starring roles in Blade: Trinity (2004) and Stealth (2005), the latter of which was a box-office flop, losing a significant amount of money. Biel was also rumored to be up for the part of Elizabeth in The Fog (a part originated by scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis). Later reports stated Biel did not want to do any more horror films. The part eventually went to Maggie Grace of Lost. Turning down the role proved to be a wise move: the remake was a box office flop, which had been predicted by various critics, as the film was not screened for the press prior to its release. After a nearly three year absence, Jessica surprised her fans by making one final appearance in the series finale of 7th Heaven in May 2006. Breakthrough (2006 - present)

After several indifferent feature films, her film career finally blossomed when she played a turn-of-the-century duchess in The Illusionist (2006), which received good reviews and generated a profit at the box office. In 2006, she also starred Home of the Brave, about soldiers returning from Iraq, premiered in Los Angeles on December 5, 2006. Girls Aloud are a Smash Hits Poll Winners, TMF award-winning and BRIT Award-nominated British girl group created on ITV1 talent show Popstars: The Rivals in 2002. The group, consisting of Cheryl Cole (née Tweedy), Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh, has gone on to become one of the most successful pop groups of the decade with a record breaking fifteen consecutive Top 10 singles (including three number ones), four platinum albums (including a number one) and record sales in excess of 4.2 million in the UK alone. They have also scored successes around Europe with Number One singles in Greece and Ireland, as well as making an impact in countries further afield, such as Mexico and Australia.

Their British production team Xenomania are well-known for embracing various influences, from Electronica, House, Power Pop and Rock among others. Indeed, the music of Girls Aloud ranges from the distinctly 1980's sound of "The Show" to "Love Machine" and much of the Chemistry album, which looks back to the 1960's. Girls Aloud's songs frequently eschew traditional verse-chorus strong structure - a technique which can be heard most clearly in "Biology" or "Sexy! No No No..." - and often exploit polyphonic (or even contrapuntal) textures, giving their music a complex, multi-layered sound.

Girls Aloud hold the record for the shortest time between forming and reaching number one in the UK Charts (with their platinum-selling debut single "Sound of the Underground", and have since become one of the few reality television groups to have had continued success with Guinness World Records listing them as the Most Successful Reality TV Group in the 2007 edition. Their record of fifteen consecutive top ten singles is also unmatched by any other girl group beating the Spice Girls' previous record of ten, but not their string of number one's.

For a contemporary pop group manufactured on reality television they have received unprecedented praise from broadsheet newspapers and the rock music press, with publications including the Observer Music Monthly, and the NME giving their music rave reviews, with The Observer calling "Biology" the "single of the decade".

Formation

Girls Aloud were formed on November 30, 2002 in front of millions of viewers on the ITV1 programme Popstars: The Rivals. The concept of the programme was to produce a boyband and a girlband who would be 'rivals' and compete for the Christmas number one single in 2002. Following the initial success of Hear'Say (winners of the original Popstars show), several thousand applicants attended auditions across the UK in hope of being selected for the show. Ten men and ten women were chosen as finalists by judges Pete Waterman, Louis Walsh and Geri Halliwell with Big Brother presenter Davina McCall taking the contestants through the auditions and the shows each week. However, two finalists were disqualified before the live shows began: Hazel Kaneswaren was found to be too old to participate whilst Nicola Ward refused to sign the contract, claiming the pay the band would go on to receive was too poor. Kimberley Walsh and Nicola Roberts were chosen as their replacements, who had made it into the final fifteen, but were not originally chosen for the final ten.

During October and November, the finalists took to the stage participating in week-by-week live performances every Saturday night (alternating between the girls and boys each week). One contestant was eliminated each week (due to polling the least amount of phone votes) until the final line-ups of the boy band and girl band emerged. The five girls who polled enough votes to make it into the band were (in order) Cheryl Tweedy, Nicola Roberts, Nadine Coyle, Kimberley Walsh, and Sarah Harding, with Javine Hylton missing out on a place in the band, despite previous expectations that she would be placed in the line-up. They called themselves Girls Aloud and were managed by Louis Walsh until 2005 when Hilary Shaw replaced him. The runners up, a boy band called One True Voice were managed by Pete Waterman.

The two bands competed for the number one position in the Christmas Week UK singles chart. Girls Aloud won the battle with their single "Sound of the Underground" (produced by Brian Higgins and Xenomania) which stayed at number one for four weeks. Disney Channel viewers later voted this as best single of 2002–2003 at the Disney Channel Kids Awards. Originally tipped to be more successful than the girls, One True Voice released just two singles before disbanding in Summer 2003.

Subsequent career

2002–2004: Sound of the Underground

After the huge success of "Sound of the Underground" the newly formed group took several months to record their debut album.

They followed their début single with the number two hit "No Good Advice" in May 2003. The song received critical acclaim and the video, whilst known to have been the girls' least favourite video due to problems in production, was deemed one of the sexiest videos of the year.

The debut album, Sound of the Underground, was released on 26 May 2003. It went straight in at number two, behind Justin Timberlake's album Justified. One of the tracks, "Girls Allowed", was written for the girls by ex-Westlife star Bryan McFadden while "Some Kind of Miracle" was co-written by former B*Witched star Edele Lynch.

2004–2005: What Will the Neighbours Say?

After a brief break, the girls returned to promote brand new single "The Show", in June 2004, the first release from their second album. It had an unusual structure for a pop song, consisting of a number of interchanged sections rather than the more typical verse-chorus form. This single showed off a new look for the girls and was backed with a promotional campaign prior to its première featuring five empty chairs with each of the girls' names on. This built up excitement over the new look and later featured on the single cover with the girls in their seats. When released, it entered the singles chart at number two.

2005–2006: Chemistry

After a short break following their first tour, the girls began work on their third album. The first single to be released from "Chemistry" was "Long Hot Summer" in August 2005 and charted at number seven, ending their consecutive top five run but continuing their unbroken run of top ten singles. The single that launched their third album was "Biology". It entered the UK charts at number four in November 2005 and equalled the Spice Girls record of ten consecutive top ten singles in the UK.

Their third studio album Chemistry was released on December 5, 2005. It features "Models", a song first heard being recorded on their ITV2 documentary Girls Aloud: Home Truths and also used as the theme music to their E4 documentary Girls Aloud: Off the Record. It also boasts writing credits from JC Chasez of 'N Sync fame, who penned the track Watch Me Go. The album peaked on the charts at number eleven, their lowest ever, despite overwhelming critical acclaim; it eventually went platinum and has currently sold over 350,000 copies in total.

2006–2007: The Sound of Girls Aloud

n September 2006, the official Girls Aloud web site confirmed the release of The Sound of Girls Aloud — a compilation that contains Girls Aloud's singles and some new and unreleased material. The album was released on October 30, 2006 and on November 5, 2006 débuted at number one on the UK album chart. After a mere eight weeks it became the group's biggest selling album to date. The album was also released on a limited edition double CD format containing live tracks and previously unavailable tracks such as "Singapore" and "Hanging On The Telephone, a cover of the Blondie single; this has now become a highly priced collectors item. As of August 2007 the album has gone 2x Platinum and has sold almost three quarters of a million copies.

2007–Present: Fourth studio album

On July 13, 2007 Girls Aloud's official website announced that the new single is to be called "Sexy! No, No, No..." and is to be released on September 3. The track was played exclusively on The Chris Moyles Show on the 19th of July at 8:10am. It has been described by Popjustice as Girls Aloud's "noisiest single yet". It was performed for the first time at T4 On The Beach in Weston-Super-Mare on Sunday 22nd July.

According to play.com, Girls Aloud's fourth studio album is to be released on November 19. Sarah has said "Its been such a busy summer recording new material, we can't wait to play it to everyone. We can't reveal anything just yet except that it's a really great new edgy sound and we hope you love it as much as we do". Sarah also said "We're still in the process of making the first few singles, and now we're just writing and recording," with Nadine adding that they had not decided on a title yet.

When Kimberley was asked what the name of the latest album would be, she replied: "We haven't actually decided. We will choose a name after we have released the second single and can clearly see which direction the album is going in."

Popjustice

The Popjustice £20 Music Prize is awarded every year by a panel of judges (or sometimes a public vote) to the best British pop single of the previous twelve months. The competition has been running since 2003. Girls Aloud have been nominated every year, and have won it three times. The girls are currently nominated for the 2007 Popjustice Music Prize for their hit single "Something Kinda Ooooh".

Victoria Beckham (née Adams), (born April 17, 1974 in Goff's Oak, Hertfordshire, England) is an English singer, songwriter, fashion designer and television personality. Beckham is part of the pop group Spice Girls, and was dubbed 'Posh Spice' as part of the pop group. Since the Spice Girls followed separate careers, Beckham has released four UK Top 10 singles.

She is also known for being married to British football player David Beckham. Her career and marriage to David Beckham have made her both the fifty-second richest woman in Britain and the six hundred and nineteenth richest person in Britain with husband David, with an estimated joint wealth of £112 million.

Music career

Spice Girls

Victoria Beckham (then Adams) joined the all-girl band Spice Girls, first called "Touch," in 1994, together with Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Melanie Brown and Melanie Chisholm. The group's first single, "Wannabe," went to number one in the UK and the U.S., and would be followed by eight other hugely successful number one singles from their albums Spice and Spiceworld. Each member of the group received a nickname from the media: Victoria became "Posh Spice,". The group would become one of the most successful acts of the 1990s, selling in excess of fifty-five million records worldwide. After the release of their third album, Forever, which was much less successful than their previous two albums, the Spice Girls stopped recording, and Victoria would eventually take steps toward a solo career.

In 2007, the Spice Girls confirmed that they have reformed and are due to go on tour. Just a year earlier on February 26, 2006, Victoria Beckham stated in an interview with the Sunday Mirror: "I'm never going to sing again, unless it was a chance to do something with the Spice Girls. I don't really miss the shows we did together. I miss the girls more. I see Geri a lot — I love her, she's amazing. I speak to the others from time to time. I love them too and miss them." Beckham also declared that she and her former Spice colleagues were enjoying their solo careers in various fields. She said: "We're all still doing our own thing."

Virgin Records

In August 2000, Victoria released her first solo single: "Out Of Your Mind", a collaboration with the Garage act the Truesteppers and Dane Bowers. The week of release coincided with the release of "Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)" by Spiller ft. Sophie Ellis-Bextor, resulting in a chart battle dubbed 'Posh vs. Posher' by the tabloids. Following a huge publicity campaign, "Out Of Your Mind" was outsold by 20,000 copies and debuted at number two with first week sales of 180,584 copies.

Beckham signed a recording contract with her group label Virgin Records. Her true debut single as a solo artist, "Not Such An Innocent Girl", was released in September 2001. Again, she faced competition in another hugely hyped chart battle, this time with Kylie Minogue's single "Can't Get You Out Of My Head". Beckham was unlikely to beat Kylie, but she gave the project huge promotion, and the record had an expensive and futuristic video. In the week of release, the tabloid newspaper The Sun ran a daily progress chart covering the chart battle, but they gave up half way through the week when it was clear the battle was a one horse race. A potential factor attributable to Beckham's weaker sales could be the due to the media furor she created after wearing a fake lip ring during a live performance in Birmingham, an event that also saw her getting booed and pelted with fruit by a hostile public. She was widely criticised by many groups, including the British Dental Association, for setting a bad example that her younger fans may wish to emulate. "Not Such An Innocent Girl" did, nevertheless, sell respectably in the UK and was a #1 hit in the Philippines.

Beckham's eponymously titled debut album reached number 10 in the UK album chart. The album featured the much talked about "Every Part Of Me", a song co-written by Beckham and dedicated to her son, Brooklyn, who features at the start, Brooklyn's 'part' allegedly being an off-chance recording which took place during a recording session break.

The second and final single to be released from the album was "A Mind of Its Own" The single reached number 6 in the UK and sold 56,500 copies. Some speculate that due to its not hitting the Top 3, rumours started spreading that Beckham was soon to be dropped by her label. These were refuted at the time.

A third single, "I Wish", was promoted but never materialised. The single version was a remix featuring Robbie Craig, and was performed on TV on Friday Night's All Wright. Many hoped this single would revitalise the album's fortunes, but following the announcement of Beckham's second pregnancy it was shelved, and Beckham was dropped from the label Virgin Records.

The Telstar / 19 Management era

Telstar Records signed Victoria in 2002 in a deal made with Simon Fuller's 19 Management. She spent much of 2002 recording a 'pop-influenced' album, but Beckham allegedly shelved it after not being happy with the results. Instead of pop, Beckham wanted to record tracks with a more RnB and hip hop influence, and to accomplish this she began working with urban producer Damon Dash. There were some unsubstantiated rumours regarding both Dash and Beckham at the time. These plans reportedly worried Telstar and Simon Fuller, but they compromised with Beckham, allowing her to release a Dash produced track ("This Groove") along-side one of her earlier pop tracks ("Let Your Head Go") from the shelved album.

The resulting double A-side single "Let Your Head Go / This Groove" was released in the UK in late-December 2003, following heavy promotion and many TV appearances across the Christmas period. The single charted well at #3. This double A-side remains Victoria's last single release to date.

As another compromise, Telstar allowed Beckham to release some of her urban tracks on "The Real Beckhams" DVD. This 2003 documentary was released in January 2004, and bonus material included the videos for "Let Your Head Go" and "This Groove", as well as four previously unreleased tracks: "Resentment", "That Dude", "Me And You This Time" and "Valentine" (none of the songs had a writing credit from Beckham). "Resentment" has since been covered by Beyoncé Knowles and released on her solo album B'Day (2006).

Outside of the UK, Damon Dash had plans for Beckham in the United States, including a potential release of "Let Your Head Go / This Groove" under the name of "Posh Spice Victoria Beckham". The release was proposed for sometime between March to May 2004, but never occurred. A Dash produced track "It's That Simple" featuring M.O.P. was promoed to vinyl, and received a premiere on BBC urban music radio station 1Xtra. This only generated further criticism, with the feeling being that Beckham was a far from convincing urban act. Around this time, a 90-second snippet of a track called "Come Together" was released to the media, which was notable for sampling the Beatles' song of the same name.

With the UK media describing her music career a failure, and combined with a rumored fall out between Dash and Fuller, remaining plans for Victoria's music career were canceled. To try and salvage her music career, Beckham again began work on pop-styled tracks in 2004. It is known that she recorded a track she had written with Cathy Dennis entitled "My Love Is For Real" (not to be confused with the Paula Abdul song of the same name). With the collapse of Telstar Records, the pressure to stay with her family caused by the Rebecca Loos scandal, and the announcement of Beckham's third pregnancy, this song has never been heard, except for a remix by Armand van Helden.

Fashion career

In 2000, Victoria Beckham made a guest appearance on the catwalk for Maria Grachvogel. Beckham has also appeared on the runway for her close friend Roberto Cavalli and was for a period exclusively dressed by him for red-carpet and social events.

In 2004, Beckham designed a fashion line for Rock and Republic called 'VB Rocks,' consisting mainly of jeans for the high end of the market (retailing at approximately $300 in the U.S.). She has also worked on a range of women's clothes including shirts and skirts. The clothing features a logo of a crown with the letters "VB". In September 2006, Beckham ceased working with Rock and Republic in order to launch her own Denim label. The new line of Beckham's jeans collection is called DVB Style.

Beckham was briefly the face of Rocawear, and has for or a number of years produced a range of handbags and jewellery in association with the Japanese store Samantha Thavasa. In July 2006, Victoria Beckham released a line of sunglasses (which she had been seen wearing at the World Cup games). In September 2006, 'Intimately Beckham', a his-and-her fragrance line in association with Coty the world's largest fragrance house was launched. On June 5, 2007, she won two British Glamour Magazine Awards: one for "Woman of the Year" and another for "Entrepreneur of the Year," which celebrated her fashion achievements.

Books

Her autobiography, entitled Learning to Fly, was the 3rd best selling non-fiction title of 2001 and the total UK sales stand at more than 500,000 copies. The title was taken from a line in a song from the musical Fame, which Victoria adored as a child.

Beckham is widely believed to have told a Spanish journalist in 2005 that "I've never read a book in my life". Although often used to criticise and ridicule Victoria, this 'quote' was actually a mistranslation from the original Spanish in which the interview was printed - she actually stated she never had time to finish reading a book because she was always running around after her children.

Her second book, a fashion book titled That Extra Half an Inch: Hair, Heels and Everything In Between, was published on October 30, 2006. It was co-written by Hadley Freeman, deputy fashion editor of The Guardian and a contributing editor of Vogue and includes photography by Mario Testino, Annie Leibovitz and Steven Meisel. On the Sunday Times Book Charts, the book stood at #2.

Television

Over the course of her career, Beckham has shot five official reality documentaries.

The first of which, entitled Being Victoria Beckham, focused on Beckham discussing her career as a solo artist, with the release of her first album, also showing her at various photo shoots and recording sessions. The second, The Real Beckhams, focussed on the Beckhams' move to Madrid from London after David was signed to Real Madrid. It also featured Beckham re-launching her solo career and showed her mocking the tabloid stories she reads in the paper every day. This particular special was released on DVD.

The third was called Full Length & Fabulous: The Beckhams' World Cup Party, which followed Victoria and David Beckham organising and making preparations to host a World Cup Party at a marquee in the grounds of their mansion in Hertfordshire, which aimed to raise money for their charity. The documentary also filmed the event itself, where the menu was designed especially by friend and chef Gordon Ramsay and the charity auction was hosted by Graham Norton. The fourth being titled Victoria's Secrets is rare and much sought after by fans, little detail is known about it aside from it being aired only in the U.K.

To document Victoria Beckham's preparations for her family's move to America, she signed a deal with NBC for six episodes of a half-hour unscripted reality tv series. The show is called Victoria Beckham: Coming to America and aired on Monday July 16, 2007 in America and Canada. The show was savaged by the American media and critics, where amongst other reviews, The New York Post described the show as "an orgy of self-indulgence" and also described Beckham as "vapid and condescending". It became the third most watched programme in its time-slot and received viewing figures of 4.9 million in America, beaten by a repeat of Wife Swap and two sitcoms. Despite the originally planned six episodes, the show was cut to a one hour special only. The programme aired in Britain on July 17, 2007 on ITV with 3.5 million viewers tuning in. The programme was produced by Simon Fuller who will be managing her and the Spice Girls on their come back tour, which will begin as early as November of 2007. Despite a TV show in the works, Victoria has denied plans to embark upon an LA movie career.

In July 2007, it was announced that Beckham was shortly to begin filming a cameo appearance playing herself in an episode of the second season of ABC's hit series Ugly Betty.

Personal life

Beckham's parents are Anthony William and Jacqueline Adams. She has a younger sister, Louise, and a younger brother, Christian. She attended Jason Theatre School in Hoddesdon. At 17, she started going to the Laine Arts Theatre College in Epsom, Surrey. Beckham later enjoyed huge success as 'Posh Spice' in the girl band, The Spice Girls. Victoria started dating footballer David Beckham in 1997, and the couple were dubbed "Posh and Becks" by the media. Beckham proposed to Victoria on 24 January 1998 in a restaurant in Cheshunt, England, and their first son, Brooklyn Joseph, was born on 4 March 1999. The two were married at Luttrellstown Castle, Ireland on 4 July 1999, and the wedding attracted tremendous media coverage. Beckham's teammate Gary Neville was the best man, and the couple's son Brooklyn, then four months old, was the ring bearer. Magazine, but newspapers were still able to obtain photographs showing them sitting on golden thrones. 437 staff were employed for the wedding reception, which was estimated to have cost £500,000. The Beckhams are also known for their close friendship with Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

After many preparations, Victoria and David Beckham moved to Los Angeles where David has been signed to play for the LA Galaxy soccer team. On arrival in America on July 13, 2007, the couple were met by hundreds of paparazzi and media representatives, causing a media frenzy. They are now residing in a $22 million Beverly Hills mansion with 10 security guards. To create publicity for their move to America, the couple were photographed in their underwear for the fashion magazine, W. In New York, NY, on 02 July 1986, Lindsay Dee Lohan (she later changed her middle name to Morgan) became the first child of a proud couple: Dina (a one-time Radio City "Rockette" who now manages her daughter's career) and Michael Lohan (a long-time Wall Street trader who developed, then sold, his family's multi-million-dollar pasta business to fund and develop major studios and independent Hollywood productions). Early in 1999, Lindsay filmed another movie. Life-Size — originally a Wonderful World of Disney production later released on home video — allowed Lindsay to act with Tyra Banks.

In 2000, Lindsay won the role of "Rose" in Bette Midler's television sitcom, Bette. After shooting the pilot episode, the show's producers decided it would be easier on the crew — most of whom lived near Los Angeles — if filming moved to California. Lindsay gave up the role to stay in New York, and Los Angeles-area actress Marina Malota was pegged to take over the role of Midler's teen-aged daughter. The series was canceled only a few months later, due to sagging ratings and the strain on its stars (ironically, Midler had to fly cross-country from her New York home to tape her own show).

In June, 2001, Lindsay completed filming the role of "Lexy Gold" in Get a Clue, the Disney Channel Original Movie of the Month for January, 2002 — later rescheduled for telecast in June, 2002.

Walt Disney Pictures announced on 31 July 2002 that Lindsay had signed on to play Anna Coleman in the theatrical remake of Freaky Friday. To update another film from its own vaults, Disney signed Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis (A Fish Called Wanda) as the mother-and-daughter team who wake up one day in each other's bodies. Lohan — who already proved she could fill Hayley Mills' shoes and then some — took on a role that helped propel a young Jodie Foster to stardom. Lindsay also sang the film's closing theme, Ultimate, written for the film by songwriters Jeff Coplan and Robert Ellis Orrall.

In September, 2002, Lindsay took her first step toward fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a recording artist when one of the biggest names in music, Emilio Estefan, Jr., took Lindsay under his professional wing. Lorne Michaels asked Lindsay to host SNL as Mean Girls premiered in May, 2004, and she would host the show again a year later.

In 2004, Lindsay signed with Casablanca Records and released her first studio album, Speak. Her first single, Rumors—about a teen celebrity trying to keep her private life out of the spotlight—was a Gold Record, and the video was nominated for Best Pop Video at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards. Her second album, A Little More Personal (Raw), included the single, Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father). In that video, Lindsay's sister, Aliana, made her acting debut.

Early life
Theron was born in Benoni, Gauteng, South Africa. Her father, Charles Theron, was a construction company owner of French Huguenot descent; her mother, Gerda, is of German descent and took over her husband's business after his death. Theron's first language is Afrikaans. She is also fluent in English and speaks some Xhosa. In the United States, both in her films and while being interviewed, etc., Theron speaks with a typical American accent and style of speech, leading most people to assume she is American.

"Theron" is a French surname pronounced in Afrikaans as "Tronn," although she has said that she prefers the pronunciation "Thrown." The pronunciation commonly used in the United States involves two syllables, with stress on the first.

Theron grew up as the only child on her parents' farm near Johannesburg (Benoni). At the age of thirteen, Charlize was sent to boarding school and began her studies at the National School Of The Arts in Johannesburg. At the age of 16, Theron traveled to Milan, Italy, on a one-year modeling contract, after winning a local competition. Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone was the third of eight children born into a large Italian family in Michigan. Her father, Sylvio Ciccone, was a design engineer for General Motors, and her mother was Madonna Ciccone. She died when Madonna was six years old.

Madonna attended the University of Michigan on a dance scholarship for two years before heading to New York City to become a ballet dancer. She danced for the Patrick Hernandez Revue before teaming with Dan Gilroy to form the band, Breakfast Club. She later formed the band, Emmy, with Stephen Bray. Their first two singles, "Everybody" and "Physical Attraction" became club hits in New York. The next single, "Holiday," became her first Top Ten hit. Since then Madonna has had a spectacular career in show business as a singer, actress, and producer. Through her ability to evolve with the audiences, she has had more number one singles than any other female artist, eleven in all. Her song, "Rescue Me" off of THE IMMACULATE COLLECTION, became the highest-debuting single by a female artist in U.S. chart history, entering at number 15. Early relationships and first marriage
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Madonna dated Dan Gilroy, with whom she formed the band Breakfast Club. In the early 1980s, she also dated musician Stephen Bray, who later co-produced songs such as "Into the Groove" and "Express Yourself", artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, DJ and record producer Mark Kamins, and musician Jellybean Benitez, who produced tracks and remixed her debut album Madonna.

While filming the music video for "Material Girl" in 1985, Madonna began dating actor Sean Penn. The two were married later that year on Madonna's twenty-seventh birthday. Their relationship was marred by Penn's frequent outbursts against the press, leading the couple to be dubbed the “Poison Penns.” After filing and withdrawing divorce papers in December 1987, Madonna and Penn separated on New Year's Eve of 1988 after allegations of abuse on Penn's part, and were officially divorced in September 1989. David Banda adoption
On October 10, 2006, Madonna filed adoption papers for a Malawian baby boy named David Banda, whom her family renamed David Banda Mwale Ciccone Ritchie, born September 24, 2005, during her trip to an orphanage in Malawi.

After a passport and visa were issued for the child, Banda was flown out of Malawi on October 16.The adoption raised public controversy about whether special treatment was given to Madonna considering the fact that Malawian law normally requires one year of residence for potential adoptive parents.

Madonna appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show on October 25, 2006, to refute the allegations. During the half-hour interview, the singer claimed that there are no written adoption laws in Malawi that regulate foreign adoption and that she had been planning to adopt for two years. She also claimed that Banda had been in critical condition and was suffering from pneumonia after surviving malaria and tuberculosis when she had found him in the orphanage. In addition, Madonna blamed the media for "doing a great disservice to all the orphans of Africa, period, not just the orphans of Malawi", by discouraging people from adopting children from African nations. She stated, "I wanted to go into a Third World country—I wasn't sure where—and give a life to a child who might not otherwise have had one."

On October 22, 2006, it was reported that Yohane Banda, David Banda's birth father, did not understand what "adoption" meant and that he had not realized that he was giving up his son "for good." He had assumed that this arrangement was more like a fostering agreement. A few days later, after the Winfrey interview, he said, "These so-called human rights activists are harassing me every day, threatening me that I am not aware of what I am doing." He was also reported to say, "They want me to support their court case, a thing I cannot do for I know what I agreed with Madonna and her husband." On November 1, 2006, Madonna responded to Banda's comments on an Dateline NBC interview with Meredith Vieira by saying that Yohane Banda had known what he was doing, having refused to accept her offer to financially support him and the child without adopting the child.

Since the late-1990s, Madonna has become a devotee of the Kabbalah Centre and a disciple of its controversial head Rabbi Philip Berg and his wife Karen. Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie attend Kabbalah classes and have been reported to have adopted a number of aspects of the movement associated with Judaism. The media has reported that Madonna has taken on the Biblical name of Esther and has donated millions of dollars to Kabbalah Centres in London, New York, and Los Angeles. She no longer performs on Friday nights because this is the time when the Jewish Sabbath begins. Madonna wears a red string and has visited Israel with members of the Kabbalah Centre to celebrate some of the Jewish holidays. Controversy erupted again well before the release of her most recent album Confessions on a Dance Floor. Many Israeli rabbis condemned Madonna and the forthcoming song "Isaac" (tenth on its track listing) because they believed the song to be a tribute to Rabbi Isaac Luria, also known as Yitzhak Luria (1534–1572), one of the greatest Kabbalists of all time, and claimed that Jewish law forbids using a holy rabbi's name for profit. In interviews, Madonna had called this song: "The Binding of Isaac" and rumors spread that it was based on the major episode in the life of the Hebrew patriarch Isaac. Despite continued accusations that the song is about Isaac Luria, Madonna has repeatedly denied such accusations, claiming she could not think of a title for the song and, therefore, named it after Yitzhak (Isaac) Sinwani. In the song, Madonna sings with Sinwani, an Israeli singer, who is chanting a Yemenite Jewish song. Said Madonna: "The album isn't even out, so how could Jewish scholars in Israel know what my song is about? I don't know enough about Isaac Luria to write a song, though I've learned a bit in my studies."

Madonna has openly defended her Kabbalah studies by stating, for example:

“ I wouldn't say studying Kabbalah for eight years goes under the category or falls under the category of being a fad or a trend. Now there might be people who are interested in it because they think it's trendy, but I can assure you that studying Kabbalah is actually a very challenging thing to do. Furthermore, Madonna said in a BBC interview that she believes Christianity is intolerant of questioning, whereas Kabbalah is not. Madonna has also defended Kabbalah against detractors who claim it is a cult designed to extort money from followers.

LOS ANGELES (US): Paris Hilton told CNN's Larry King she would never again drink and drive and that her time in jail was "a time-out in life."

In her first televised interview since leaving jail, a demure Hilton said Wednesday that even though she's an Aquarius and "we're social people," her time behind bars taught her "there's a lot more important things in life" than partying.

"I'm frankly sick of it," Hilton said, with loose, re-blonded locks and camera-ready makeup. "I've been going out for a long time now. Yeah, it's fun, but it's not going to be the mainstay of my life anymore."

She said her incarceration was "a very traumatic experience" that inspired a "journey" of self-discovery that she intends to continue. The world will see a new Paris Hilton, she said.

"I'm glad it happened in a way because it's changed my life forever," she said in the pre-taped, hour-long interview. "I feel stronger than ever and, I don't know, I feel like this is a lesson in disguise."

The hotel heiress spent about 23 days in custody before she was sprung Tuesday. Hilton passed the time, she said, considering "what was important and what I want to do."

Using her fame to bring attention to social causes rather than the newest Hollywood nightspot, she said"I feel like being in the spotlight, I have a platform where I can raise awareness for so many great causes and just do so much with this instead of superficial things like going out," she said. "I want to help raise money for kids and for breast cancer and multiple sclerosis."

Hilton said a big misconception about her is that she lives off her family's money."I completely disagree with that," she said.

I work very hard. I run a business. I've had a book on The New York Times best-sellers list. I'm on the fifth season of my TV show. I did an album. I do movies."

The media has exaggerated her party-girl image, she said, telling King twice she's never taken drugs and does not have a drinking problem.

"I'm not really into it," Hilton said of drinking.

Asked why she never tried to correct inaccurate reports of partying and drug use, Hilton said, "I'm telling you right now so I put a stop to it."

Alone in her cell for 23 hours a day, Hilton devoted herself to reading, writing and thinking. She said she made plans to help her fellow inmates and imagined ways to be "a more responsible role model."

"I feel like God does make everything happen for a reason," she said. "And it gave me, you know, a time-out in life just to really find out what is important and what I want to do, figure out who I am."

Educated in Roman Catholic schools, Hilton said she's "always been religious" and "always had a sense of spirituality but even more so after being in jail."

She bought a Bible from the jail commissary and read it daily, she said. Asked to name her favorite
passage, she smiled and looked away.

"I don't have a favorite," she said.

At various points during the interview, Hilton read excerpts from her jailtime journals, beginning each passage with a heavy sigh. She wrote about being at a crossroads, characterizing it as "neither a downfall nor a failure, but a new beginning," and about her "compassion for those I left behind at the prison."

"I want to help set up a place where these women can get themselves back on their feet," she read. "I know I can make a difference and hopefully stop this vicious circle of these people going in and out of jail."

Hilton said she suffers from claustrophobia and attention deficit disorder, for which she takes medication.

She said sheriff's officials released her to home confinement after just three days because of
claustrophobia and anxiety and panic attacks.

After a judge ordered her back to jail, Hilton said she coped by meditating and reading letters from fans.

But she still had nightmares of "someone trying to break into my cell and hurt me."

"Just the whole idea of being in jail is really scary," she said. "I hate to be alone so that was really just hard for me in the beginning."

When asked about the party crowd she hangs with, including Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and her reality TV co-star Nicole Richie, Hilton said "everybody makes mistakes."

"I think it's hard for anyone when you're in the spotlight so much," she said. "It's overwhelming for any young girl, but I've handled it well."●

Paris Hilton appears to have been serious about turning over a new leaf after reports claim she wants to move to a quieter area.

It is believed the heiress has asked her dad to find her a new house in Beverly Hills.

Paris is apparently concerned that her current home is surrounded by the temptation of clubs and bars.

But the 26-year-old's plan might be flawed as the area she'd like to move to might not be so quiet considering rocker Ozzy Osbourne recently sold his mansion there because it was too noisy.

Paris was released from jail on June 26 to a media frenzy.

In her first interview with Larry King, Hilton said that she wanted to continue her "journey" of self-discovery.

Born August 14 1966, in Cleveland, Ohio, Halle Maria Berry was raised by her mother Judith, a psychiatric ward nurse, with her older sister Heidi. Judith's husband, Halle's father, walked out on her family when she was only 4 years old.

Although living in a single parent household was somewhat tough, Halle's mom managed to move the family out of the inner city neighborhood and into the suburbs of Cleveland. Because the neighborhood was predominantly white, Halle and her sister were treated cruelly because of their dark skin.

Determined not to let the color of her skin get the better of her, Halle made it a point to make friends, while her dream of becoming an actress had already begun to surface.

By the time Halle reached high school, she was a cheerleader, an honor society member, editor of the school paper, and class president. Not surprisingly, she was crowned her high school's prom queen.

In 1983, when she was only 17 years old, Halle's boyfriend at the time entered her name in the Miss Teen Ohio beauty pageant. Once again, it's no surprise that Halle got to wear the crown in that competition.

But it didn't stop there, Halle won many other high-profile competitions, including Miss Teen All American, Miss USA and Miss World. Once she was done raking in points by winning pageant after pageant, Halle continued her education at Cleveland's Cuyahoga Community College in 1986, studying broadcast journalism.

Unfortunately for Halle, she missed the role of a lifetime when she passed up the lead role in the film Speed, which ultimately worked wonders for Sandra Bullock's career.

Other movies that Halle starred in include Executive Decision (1996); Race the Sun (1996); B*A*P*S (1997); Bulworth (1998); and Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, for which she won a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy for Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV movie.

Paris Hilton, the celebrity socialite, walked free from jail in California on Tuesday after serving roughly half of her 45-day sentence for driving-related violations.

The 26-year-old blond hotel heiress left the Century Regional Facility in Lynwood, California, amid a mass of cameras before being whisked away in a car with her parents Rick and Kathy Hilton. She made no statement.

Hilton was sentenced to probation for three years after a drink-driving incident last September.

But on two occasions in the following months she was stopped by officers who discovered her driving on a suspended license.

The second stop landed her in court and then in jail.

Hilton, the star of the reality TV show The Simple Life, will discuss her time behind bars on Wednesday when she appears on CNN’s Larry King Live.

It emerged today that objects from Hilton’s rubbish - such as dog food tins and a used toothbrush - are available to buy on eBay for a starting price of $40 (£20).

The items are said to have been taken from the star’s garbage outside her Los Angeles home.

LOS ANGELES - So, how much would you pay for an empty dog-food can if you thought it was snatched from Paris Hilton's trash? So far the answer is $0.

But the people from HollywoodStarTrash.com are counting on someone forking over at least $40. That's the starting bid listed on eBay for the can that once contained a helping of Party Animal organic gourmet. Bidding closes Sunday.

As of midday Monday, the can had no takers. Nor had anyone put down a bid for the used toothbrush, the Hilton fan letter or the Hilton-autographed postcard also said to have been plucked from the hotel heiress' garbage.

According to a video placed on hollywoodstartrash.com, a guy wearing an Uncle Sam mask tracked down Hilton's address from a map to movie stars' homes. Then he and a colleague, who remains off camera, sneaked into Hilton's neighborhood before dawn on a recent Thursday and absconded with six bags of garbage.

"We discovered that Paris Hilton throws out a well organized and quite neat bag of trash, save for a few Cobb salads and banana peels," says one of the two.

Neither immediately responded to an e-mailed request to elaborate.

Their Web site indicated that as time goes by they'll be sifting through other celebrities' trash and offering it for sale. A man identified as a lawyer, who appears on the video, tells them their actions are legal as long as they wait for celebrities to put their trash cans out on the street and don't trespass on their property.

As to whether the trash is really Hilton's, they place the following statement on each of the eBay offerings: "We guarantee that each item comes from the trash bins outside the celebrity's home!"

Dealing with jail time for driving offences was difficult, but now Paris Hilton faces the aftermath.

The 26-year-old heiress is expected to be released from a Los Angeles County women's jail early this week, and she professes a desire to shift her life's course.

But unlike most newly released inmates, Hilton has a trail of photographers in constant pursuit and a career based largely on partying and posing for pictures.

Hilton insists she is a changed woman after serving time behind bars.

"I would like to make a difference," she told TV interviewer Barbara Walters in a call from jail. "God has given me this new chance."

Saying it is one thing and doing it is another, said Dorian Traube, a professor of social work at the University of Southern California.

"If this indeed has changed her, then the transition will be very difficult because she'll have to find a new purpose in life" beyond being queen of the party scene, Traube said. "Her life will have to change drastically, which is going to be tricky because she's going to be in the public eye more than ever."

So long as she keeps her driver's licence current and does not break any laws, Hilton will complete her probation in March 2009. She can reduce that time by 12 months if she does community service or records a public-service announcement, the city attorney's office said.

But Hilton and her family have hardly shied away from the media during her time behind bars. That constant attention, along with society's "sick fascination with failure," will make Hilton's transition more challenging, Traube said.

"She has almost set herself up to fail because there's been so much talk about how she's a changed person, how she found religion and she prays all the time," she said. "People are bitter for the notoriety she has for having done very little other than party, so they're standing around waiting for her to fail."

Abandoning her party-girl image, stamped by her appearance in a sex video, in favour of a philanthropic one will bring emotional costs, too, said psychologist Jeremy Ritzlin, who ran a halfway house for recently released federal prisoners.

Hilton will be frustrated as she learns "whether she can rein herself in or not without it making her too crazy," he said. "She's not going to have an easy time adjusting because she's led a hedonistic life of escapism where she doesn't have to deal with who she is and what her problems are in the world."

Making a public service announcement against drinking and driving would be a good move for Hilton, said David Brokaw, a longtime Hollywood publicist.

"That would say she's serious" about changing, he said.

"The American people don't hold a grudge if somebody genuinely says 'I was wrong, I made mistakes, I'm sorry,"' Brokaw said. "If she says that and it's verified by what she does, then she's on her way to maybe even better acceptance and interest than ever before."

Hilton told E! News last week that she plans to build a "transitional home" to help recently released inmates readjust to freedom.

"These women just keep coming back (to jail) because they have no place to go," Hilton said. "It's a really bad cycle and if we stop it now, we can make our community a better place."

She said she is "much more grateful" after spending time in jail.

"I appreciate everything now and I think there was a lot of bad people that I was around," she told E! "I don't want to surround myself with those types of people anymore."

Only time will reveal whether Hilton has really changed, said veteran publicist Michael Levine.

"The soap opera, where it's been filled with drinking and drugs and porn videos, is very, very popular and compelling," he said. "If she turns the story to another, will it remain popular?"

In 2000, Evangeline Lilly was "discovered" in the streets of British Columbia by the famous Ford modeling agency, but she decided instead to pursue her dream of working in international relations. Six months later, she took the offer to pay for her college tuition. Returning as the Invisible Woman, Alba reveals there's more to her than meets the eye.

Hollywood actress Jessica Alba has avoided the path of self-destruction that has been walked by fellow celebrities Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan. While some A-list stars are all consumed with hitting the party scene on the sunset strip, Alba says she'd rather ditch the red carpet for a relaxing night in.

However, the beautiful 26-year-old says she would never condemn her peers' actions because she believes their turbulent lifestyles are a way of experiencing life.

In Australia to promote her latest film project Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer, Alba says:

"I don't look at it as self-destructing. I have a moral zen attitude to it all. People go through things in life and normally it's not on a scale that is so visible, it's magnified because they are in the public eye."

Alba is gracious and thoughtful as she answers questions about her crime-fighting role as Sue Storm/ Invisible Woman in the second Fantastic Four instalment.

While she won't answer questions about her personal life "because I think that's what differentiates me from other actors", Alba does touch on an issue close to her heart - breast cancer. The illness haunts Alba's family and she hopes a deal she signed with make-up giant Revlon, which is reported to be worth $5 million, will help raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.

"My mother, my grandmother, my great grandmother all had cancer and my little cousin has cancer at the moment," Alba says. "It's a horrible disease and I feel that it can be prevented, we just need more money to prevent it and Revlon is all about helping in that way."

In Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer, the foursome meet their greatest challenge yet as the enigmatic, intergalactic herald, the Silver Surfer, comes to Earth to prepare it for destruction. Alba says she has grown with her character through the two films.

"I love what a positive role model Sue is," she says. "It's nice to play a woman who is so empowered and she is not a villain, or nasty or sassy like the usual stereotype of a woman in this type of film. She is more like your mother or sister or best friend.

"She is very loving and kind and she kicks arse. It's rare to see that and I love it."

However Alba says she is vastly different to her alter-ego. "I can relate to her, like every character I play, but I am not like her," she admits. "I am a bit more of a free spirit. I am not regimented in my life. She is a scientist for a living and knows what's going on everyday and she has it planned out. I never know where I am going to be tomorrow."

Alba's rise to superstardom started at the age of 12, when she began studying with acting coaches in Los Angeles and shortly thereafter studied at the Atlantic Theatre Company. Her big break came starring in US television series Dark Angel in 2002 and since then Alba has had steady success in feature films including Never Been Kissed opposite Drew Barrymore, Idle Hands, Honey, Sin City and Into The Blue. Alba says she's beginning to feel the grip of the paparazzi's lens closing in on her personal life.

"I am definitely more visible now than I have ever been in my life and it is what it is and I really don't put that much into it," she says matter-of-factly.

"I work hard, I am a good person and I really love what I do for a living and I hope to do it for a long time. I am in it for a marathon, I am not in it for a short sprint and I think that mentality gives me a different perspective."

The Californian is now gearing up for her most challenging role yet. While Alba will be seen soon in Sin City 2 and romantic comedy Good Luck Chuck, it's her role as a blind violinist in thriller The Eye that's got her excited.

"It was really hard," Alba says of the part.

"I had gone from a romantic comedy with Good Luck Chuck and then went into this psychological thriller playing someone who is blind and has a cornea transplant, plus she is a classical violinist.

"It was the least glamorous movie I have done. I had bruises around my eyes and most of the movie they were bloodshot. It was very interesting.

"That's what I love about this industry, going from one great experience to the next."

'Sex and the City' is finally set for the big screen

Time has flown for fans of Carrie Bradshaw and her three gal-pals on the hit television series Sex and the City which aired its last original episode on the HBO cable channel in the US in 2004. Their patience for a long-promised reprise on the big screen may have been about to run out.

But, according to a report in Variety, the wait may soon be over. The Hollywood trade paper contends that a deal has been signed between HBO and New Line Studios to begin shooting a film version in this autumn.

New Line has yet to comment, but all four female leads Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis, who played Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York respectively have supposedly agreed to the big-screen reunion.

There is no word, so far, on which of their many male suitors and partners may return, although Chris Noth, who played Carrie's heartbreaker Mr Big, is also expected to appear, shortly before the closing credits.

Reviving the Manhattan antics of Carrie, with her wardrobe of Manolo Blahnik shoes and designer dresses, reportedly took so long because of contract disputes, specifically with Cattrall.

Celebrity websites have long speculated that she was holding out to be paid on a par with Parker, who got more for the television show because of her role as executive producer. Variety also reported that as part of the film deal, Cattrall has been assured future roles in forthcoming HBO programming.

Parker, who won an Emmy award as Carrie, tried to play down rumours of a rift between the actresses in an interview when she launched her clothing line, Bitten, earlier this year. "It is a very complicated puzzle to put back but not for the reason that people speculate about, because as far as I know, all of the actresses want to be together again for this movie," she said. Asked about a film, she replied: "Never say never."

Most of the original production team are also expected to reunite for the film. The executive producer of the television show, Patrick King, has already written the film's script. The series producer, John Melfi, and its creator, Darren Starr, have reportedly also signed on for the New Line project.

Sex and the City was originally inspired by a newspaper column by Candace Bushnell about her adventures dating and romancing in Manhattan.

First aired in 1998, Sex and the City quickly became a hit for HBO which, like New Line, is owned by Time Warner. It allowed it to emerge from the shadows of the traditional network broadcasters as a company able to produce first-rate comedy and drama. It followed up soon afterwards with its other stand-out success, The Sopranos, an award-winning drama series about a dysfunctional Mafia family in New Jersey.

SYDNEY : Watching Jessica Alba work the red carpet effortlessly, it's easy to forget that she's still only 26 and looks even younger. Wearing an outrageous pair of boots that could've been lifted from the Sin City set, the California girl takes the hormonal screams and the occasional grab at her elbow in her stride. This isn't Beatlemania, but it's a disconcerting experience for the casual observer.

Standing behind her on the red carpet outside a Sydney cinema, I make a rather obvious, and some might say, shallow observation: Alba is stunning. Her smile alone justifies the invention of motion pictures. This woman was born to play the iconic Nancy, the mesmerising exotic dancer in Sin City, and is surprisingly comfortable with her sexuality on screen. But Alba is adamant that a character's sexiness doesn't influence her project choices.

"It was funny that Sin City became what it became because I never read the comic books or saw the illustrations for the movie," she told me over a glass of mineral water at the InterContinental Hotel the next day.

"All I'd done was read the script. It said that I had a few scenes opposite Bruce Willis, which sounded great to me. And then I turned up in Texas and (director) Robert Rodriguez told me what I had to do and I went, 'Oh my god! What the hell?' So Sin City became something else altogether.

"My intention is never about taking the sexy role, or being the sexy one in the movie."

SEXY STAR

But the trouble with being Jessica Alba is, you usually end up being the sexy one in the movie. Born to a French-Danish mother and Mexican-Indian father, her genes were always going to be marked "exotic beauty". It's a lazy label for someone who is as American as blueberry pie, but Alba can't escape her sexuality. Even in the family-friendly Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer, out now in Singapore cinemas, Alba finds herself portraying a superhero in the tightest, figure-hugging Spandex suit. Her character, Sue Storm, might be blessed with the gift of invisibility, but she's also noted for her ability to squeeze considerable cleavage into a restricted area.

Her erotic turn in Sin City was voted MTV's Sexiest Performance of the Year, and Alba is now a fixture on men's magazines' top 10 sexy lists. Does she enjoy it?

"Why do I get all the sex questions?" She replied, masking her irritation with a self-mocking joke. "The other actors (in the Fantastic Four) get all the intelligent questions about their careers. But I'm not going to complain.

"You know, it is part of being in this business. Magazines need to do whatever it takes to keep them in the news. Compiling a list of sexy people is just a way to achieve that. Because I'm lucky enough to be employed in the movies, thank God, I just happen to be in the limelight."

Being attractive undoubtedly helps. The popcorn crowd will happily fork out for a Jessica Alba movie such as the mediocre underwater adventure caper Into The Blue when the posters depict her in a skimpy bikini.

She then confirmed every geek's fantasy when she portrayed a dirty dancer in a cowgirl costume in Sin City.

To her credit, Alba continues to take roles in smaller movies to stretch, if not break, the bonds of being a sex symbol. She played the title character in the period drama, The Sleeping Dictionary, which was filmed in Kuching and has just finished the psychological thriller, Awake, with Hayden "Darth Vader" Christensen.

"That's the way I see my career going. I'm going to mix it up," she said.

"I definitely gravitate towards more challenging roles. I just finished a horror movie remake (The Eye) in which I played a blind classical violinist, so I had to learn to play the violin, which was impossible! And I had to learn Mozart and Beethoven. My God! That really was impossible."

INVISIBLE WOMAN

Before the Hong Kong horror remake, she has to promote the all-American superhero sequel. When Fantastic Four came out in 2005, the comic book adaptation underscored the increasing irrelevance of the movie critic. The movie was a critical flop, but a commercial smash, taking over US$330 million ($461 million) at the global box office.

"The critics certainly underestimated the fan base of the Fantastic Four comic books," Alba insisted.

"The characters were a light-hearted, cheeky family of superheroes. It's not meant to be a dark, violent comic book. The real comic book fans saw it. Families saw it. Parents didn't have to worry about covering their kids' eyes or ears. That's why it was a big hit."

But the original story left a little to be desired. There was a whole lot of talking and what the Fantastics had to say wasn't all that fantastic. Alba received a dreaded Razzie nomination for the year's worst performance, which she can now laugh off. Just.

"I won a Razzie nomination, yeah!" She cheered, punching the air. "I read somewhere that Halle Berry won an Oscar and a Razzie in the same year, so it's about as relevant as that."

Nevertheless, there is a conscious effort to ensure that Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer is a superior movie.

"Of course we want to make a better movie," she said. "It would've been foolish just to throw it out. Besides, it was easier to get back into character because we all had so much chemistry together."

TIGER GIRL

Like the rest of the cast, Alba is signed on for a third movie in the Fantastic Four franchise, but before that, the industrious actress will focus on The Eye, Awake and Sin City 2.

There's no time for any more Tiger Beer commercials. Alba blushes when told that she is perhaps more famous in South-east Asia for a one-off beer commercial than for her movie resume.

"Really? They showed the Tiger beer thing in Singapore for that long? Ha. I didn't know that," she said.

Angelina Jolie has hinted at a reconciliation with estranged father Jon Voight.

The 'A Mighty Heart' star has not spoken to her Oscar-winning father since 2002 after he accused her of being unstable and an unfit mother.

With the deluge of recent press and attention on Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears, one might think that Hollywood celebs are the only young people in the world who are in trouble with the law and who revisit rehab because of their struggles with drugs and alcohol. Unfortunately, they are not alone.
Sean Covey, bestselling author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens (http://www.7habits4teens.com/) and The 6 Most Important Decisions You’ll Ever Make (http://www.6decisions.com/) and FranklinCovey senior vice president of innovations and products, said, “Drug and alcohol abuse strikes the best and brightest among us and no one is immune, no matter how rich or famous. There are many good people who become alcoholics, compulsive gamblers or drug addicts. They’re really not that different from you and me. They have the same hopes and dreams. The only thing that separates them from the rest of us is a few key choices they made, usually during their teen years.”
A survey, conducted in September 2006 by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), found alarming figures of abuse of prescription drugs among young people. There are 6.4 million people ages 12 or older who used prescription drugs non-medically in the past month. Of these, 4.7 million used narcotic pain relievers, 1.8 million used tranquilizers, 1.1 million used stimulants (including 512,000 who used methamphetamine) and 272,000 used sedatives.
A report from the Schneider Institute for Health Policy at Brandeis University in 2001 found that alcohol is the most commonly used drug among young people: it kills 6½ times more youth than all other illicit drugs combined. By the 8th grade, 52% of adolescents have consumed alcohol, and 40% of those who started drinking at age 14 or younger later developed alcohol dependence, compared with 10% of those who began drinking at age 20 or older. Also, 50% of high school seniors report drinking alcohol in the past 30 days with 32% reporting being drunk at least once in the same period.
Covey believes that many young people make the mistake of turning to drugs, alcohol and other negative addictions because they have a deeper need that is not being met:
They are trying to hide pain from the past, like a death in the family, a divorce or abuseThey have something missing from their lives (low-self esteem, past trauma incident)They have a family history of addiction of some kindThey feel insecure and desperately want to belongTheir friends are doing it and they feel pressured by themThey feel confined and want to rebelThey want to escape from their current problemsThey are bored or curiousThen, destructive patterns are established:
They start with drugs at a young ageThey begin by using gateway drugs, like tobacco, alcohol and marijuanaThey move into heavier drugsThey get addicted and their addiction consumes themThey fight the addiction — and sometimes win — but the battle continues throughout their lives“Perhaps you are one of these teen statistics, heading down the path toward addiction. Maybe you’re already hooked. Whatever your situation, remember that it’s much easier to break those habits now, while you’re still a teen, than it will be later,” said Covey.
Covey counsels teens to be in touch with their own feelings enough to know if they are feeling depressed, angry, hurt, rebellious, fearful, insecure or have some other holes in their lives that need to be filled. Instead of filling up those holes with drinking or drugs, he suggests substituting harmful substances or practices with something more satisfying and enduring, such as positive addictions, where teens ‘get high’ naturally.
He offers the following list of Positive Addictions as alternatives:
1. Exercise. Working out and exercising releases endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkillers and positive mood-makers. Have you heard of runner’s high, that euphoric feeling you get while running? Nothing can clear your head like a good workout.
2. Sports. Competing in sports is healthy, consuming and addictive. Sports will help you meet new people and keep you so occupied you won’t have time for the drug scene.
3. Music. Develop your musical talents. I have a friend who discovered he had a great gift for music at about age 13. Despite never taking a lesson, he became the best guitarist in the school. His music consumed him and when he was down, he’d play his guitar instead of drowning himself in drugs.
4. Service. Losing yourself in service has always been the best way to forget your own troubles.
5. Hobbies. Find something you love to do and get good at it. Whether it is photography, cooking or astronomy, hobbies produce a natural high without the big crash after.
6. Learning. Get turned on by learning. Read voraciously. Take advanced placement classes or college courses at your school. Pour your heart into it.
7. Family. No one cares more about you than your family, including cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents. When you’re hurting, cast your burdens upon them, instead of looking for another outlet.
8. Faith. Practicing your religion or beliefs alone or with others can give meaning and purpose of your life and offer you standards to live by.
9. Friends. In times of trouble, when problems are overwhelming, lean on good friends. Talk through your problems with them instead of the bottle.
10. Journal writing. Your journal can become your best friend, your solace, the place where you can let out all your emotions and not be judged.
Covey said, “Whether you are a famous Hollywood celebrity or an average, everyday teen, if you or others think you have a problem with substance abuse, the first step is to admit it to yourself. Then, get help from your parents, a good friend, a support group or a counselor. There are many treatment centers, programs and support groups that can help. You’re better off if you don’t try to fight it alone. Don’t procrastinate, get help now. It will only get harder the longer you wait.”

Torture is big box office these days and Vacancy finds itself sandwiched in between Paradise Lost, which came out two weeks ago, and Hostel 2, which comes out at the end of the month.
The set-up here is pretty predictable. Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson are a couple who find themselves forced to take refuge in a seedy motel.
Making the best of a bad job they start to watch a video that has been left in their room.
It turns out to be a snuff movie and, to their horror, it appears to have been filmed in their motel with the previous occupants as its stars.
And it looks like the makers are hoping for a sequel, this time with Wilson and Beckinsale as the stars. With this kind of 'by the numbers' intro a film like Vacancy really has to deliver big at the end.
Not only does this one fail to do so, the failure is likely to turn you against all the good things that have gone before.
There is a lot to admire about Vacancy. Hungarian director Nimrod Antal builds tension and atmosphere nicely to the point where the film starts to resemble a 70s video nasty in places.
In the end the film promises so much more than it delivers and it is hard not to feel cheated.

Keira Knightley's 'Atonement' to open Venice Film Festival

London - Actress Keira Knightley's upcoming flick 'Atonement' has been selected as the opening film at this year's Venice Film Festival.
The 2007 British film based on Ian McEwan's novel by the same name is director Joe Wright's second release.
As for how Wright felt about the honour given to his film, the newcomer insisted that going to the Venice film festival is a dream come true and the feeling is 'extraordinary'.
"Going to the Venice Film Festival is something one dreams of. It is just steeped in history. I keep imagining I'll bump into Sophia Loren," the BBC quoted Wright, as saying.
He however refused to comment on the chances of the film winning major awards this year but insisted that 'opening Venice' is in itself a great honour.
"Opening Venice is a prize in itself," said Wright.
Wright's first film 'Pride and Prejudice' bagged him the 'Best Newcomer' award at BAFTA, and the film was also nominated for four Oscar nominations in 2006 including a best actress nod for Knightley.
The director feels that Knightley has given her best performance ever in the new film.
"She's developing as an actress all the time and I think her performance here is the best thing she has ever done," Wright added.
The 22-year-old actress will reportedly attend the world premiere of the 2007 British film on 29 August.
According to film festival head Marco Muller, this will be the first time that a 'young' director's film will open the film festival.
"For the first time in its history, the opening film is the work of a young director," Muller said.
Muller insisted that Wright's film is so good that it could beat the techniques employed by many acclaimed directors.
"It is a film that, in terms of emotive and visual power, is greater than some of the major films of many acclaimed directors," he added.

The US socialite and heiress to the Hilton family fortune was taken back to prison screaming and in floods of tears last week after she was released only three days into a sentence for drinking driving.
Hilton had been told she could serve the remainder of her 45-day jail term at home wearing a tag. But after reports emerged that she was planning a party to celebrate her homecoming Supreme Court Judge Michael Sauer ordered her to appear in court.
After waiting two hours for Hilton he said she should be remanded for the rest of her sentence.
In a phone call to ABC News the 26-year-old, who was dragged from court screaming "It's not fair, It's not right" following the judge’s ruling, said: "I'm not the same person I was. I used to act dumb. It was an act. I am 26 years old, and that act is no longer cute.

"Now, I would like to make a difference. God has given me this new chance."
Seen by many as a spoilt rich kid, Hilton claimed she had been deeply affected by her time in jail. She claimed she had told her lawyers not to appeal against her return to prison and described her sentence as "by far the hardest thing I have ever done".
"I was not eating or sleeping. I was severely depressed and felt as if I was in a cage," she said. "It was a horrible experience."
Hilton, who must wear a jump-suit behind bars and is not allowed make-up, reportedly told ABC she would like to help in the fields of breast cancer or multiple sclerosis when she gets out.

Director: Nimrod Antal.ANYONE who has seen Hitchcock’s Psycho knows only too well that rundown, roadside motels in the middle of nowhere can seriously damage your health.Evidently, the husband and wife at the centre of Vacancy are unfamiliar with Norman Bates, otherwise they would think twice about checking into Nimrod Antal’s nasty thriller.So for 85 minutes, we’re voyeurs to all manner of psychological torture and near-death scrapes as the would-be victims fight for their lives against masked attackers, who use the motel as a makeshift set for DIY snuff movies.Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale are an odd choice for the bickering couple, but from the performances we quickly understand why their characters are poised to finalise a divorce.Beckinsale plays her Prozac-addled wife as a shrew, who constantly snipes and criticises, so our sympathy goes out to Wilson’s nice guy husband, suffering the barbs with the patience of a saint.The catalyst for the arguments is the accidental death of the couple’s son. Guilt and grief have consumed David Fox (Wilson) and his wife Amy (Beckinsale), who are returning from a visit to her parents.In the dead of night on a deserted two-lane highway, the car begins to make strange noises. It's been a bizarre and bumpy road for Johnny Depp. He tried to be a rock star, only to see his band split. Keira Christina Knightley was born to Will Knightley (also an actor) and Sharman MacDonald (actor-turned-playwright) on the 26th of March, 1985.

She first asked her parents for an agent at the tender age of three, but they refused, not wanting their daughter to follow them onto the stage. Keira kept at them, and they finally gave in when she was six. However, her parents still had a few tricks up their sleeves. As part of the deal, Keira, who is dyslexic, had to study through the school holidays, and she was only permitted to work on productions if they didn’t interfere with her education.

In 1994, at the age of nine, she completed her first movie, starring as Natasha Jordan in Moira Armstrong’s ‘A Village Affair’. Following this, she played a number of small roles in other productions.

Her first high profile role came in 1999, when she played the part of Sabe, the decoy queen in Star Wars Episode I. Her part in the film was kept secret in the lead up to the much anticipated release, and Natalie Portman was promoted as having played the roles of both the real and decoy queens so as not to spoil the surprise. A lot of fans still think Portman played both roles.

Since then, she has completed an impressive array of films, including the made-for-TV movie ‘Princess of Thieves’, the series ‘Oliver Twist’, and the thriller ‘The Hole’. She also played a small role in ‘Deflation’.

Keira’s ‘breakthrough’ role came with Gurinder Chadha’s ‘Bend It Like Beckham’, which was an unexpected hit worldwide. In order to play the part, she endured 20 weeks of tough football practice - her coach, who had trained top players, declared her more naturally talented than Michael Owen.

With the success of Bend It Like Beckham came a flurry of roles. She stepped into Julie Christie’s shoes for the controversial remake of the classic ‘Dr. Zhivago’, played Louise in ‘Pure’, and filmed ‘Love, Actually’ alongside Liam Neeson and Hugh Grant.

Soon after, Disney snapped her up to fill the corset of Elizabeth Swann in the summer box office hit ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’. Keira’s latest role sees her breathe life into King Arthur’s Guinevere in the July 2004 release of the same name.

The good news for Keira’s fans is that her roles just keep getting bigger and bigger, and her star brighter and brighter. Rest assured that we will be seeing a lot more of Keira in the future.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is a 2007 superhero film, and sequel to the 2005 film Fantastic Four. Both films are based on the comic book of the same name. The film was directed by Tim Story, who also directed the original. Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis, Julian McMahon and Kerry Washington reprised their roles from the first film. Doug Jones and Beau Garrett appear in the sequel as the Silver Surfer and Frankie Raye, respectively, along with Laurence Fishburne as the voice of the Silver Surfer. It was released June 15, 2007, in North America, and was rated PG by the MPAA for sequences of action violence, some mild language and innuendo.

Plot
Set two years after the first film, Reed Richards and Sue Storm are preparing for their wedding. A silver object enters Earth's atmosphere, radiating cosmic energy that creates massive molecular fluctuations and causes deep craters at locations across the Earth. The government approaches Reed to build a sensor to track the movements of the object.

As the wedding begins, Reed's sensor detects the phenomenon approaching New York City, causing a massive power blackout. The object destroys the sensor while the Fantastic Four protect the crowd. The Human Torch pursues the object, discovering that it is a humanoid, a "Silver Surfer". He confronts the Surfer, only to be dragged into the upper atmosphere. After his flame snuffs out, the Surfer drops him back towards Earth, but he reactivates his powers and survives the fall. Reed's examination reveals that exposure to the Surfer has caused Johnny's molecular structure to flux, allowing him to switch powers with his teammates through physical contact. Tracing the cosmic energy of the Surfer, Reed discovers that a series of planets the alien had visited before Earth have all been destroyed.

The Surfer's movements around the globe bring him past Latveria, where the cosmic energy affects Victor Von Doom, freeing him from two years as a metal statue. Doom, able to move again and returned to a human, but scarred, form traces the Surfer to the Arctic and makes him an offer to join forces. When the Surfer rebuffs him, Doom attacks. The Surfer returns fire, blasting Doom through the ice. The cosmic energy of the Surfer's blast heals Doom's body, reversing the changes seen in the first film.

Doom leverages his experience into a deal with the American military, who force the Fantastic Four to work with Doom. Deducing that the Surfer's board is the source of his power, the group develops a pulse generator that will separate him from it. While setting up the device, Sue is confronted by the Surfer, during which he reveals he is only a servant to the destroyer of worlds. The military opens fire on the Surfer, distracting him, allowing the four to fire the pulse and separate the Surfer from his board.

The military imprisons the Surfer in Siberia and forbids the Fantastic Four from interacting with him, while they torture him for information. Sue uses her powers to sneak into his cell, where she learns more information from the Surfer. He tells her his master was known by the people of his world as Galactus, a massive cloud-like cosmic entity which must feed on life-bearing planets to survive, and that his board is a homing beacon which even now summons him to the planet.

Doom, pursuing the power in the board, steals it from the compound, using a device to gain control of the board and its powers. The Fantastic Four rescue the Surfer, and pursue Doom in the Fantasticar, eventually confronting him in Shanghai. During the battle, Sue is mortally wounded. With the Surfer powerless, Johnny absorbs the combined powers of the entire team in order to battle the cosmic energy-empowered Doom. Johnny succeeds in breaking Doom's control over the Surfer's board, while the Thing uses a nearby crane to knock Doom into the harbor where he is last seen sinking; however, Galactus has already arrived. The Surfer regains the control of his board, and his power restored. He revives Sue and chooses to defend Earth by flying into Galactus and confronting him. The Surfer detonates himself in a massive blast of energy, destroying Galactus and apparently himself along with it.

The film ends with Reed and Sue marrying in Japan, in traditional Japanese wedding attire; they are again called back to action when Venice is threatened.

The credits cut back to a shot of the Silver Surfer's seemingly lifeless body floating through space. Just as he drifts off the edge of the screen his eyes open and his board races towards him.

It's been a guessing game about who Paris Hilton would grant a from-jail interview to and Barbara Walters won the coveted prize, sorta, speaking to the twice-jailed hotel heiress from her cell during a phone conversation on Sunday that she then spoke about today. The story goes, as reported by Star Magazine, that Kathy Hilton, the mother of Paris Hilton, was speaking to Barbara Walters about her daughter on Sunday when The Simple Life star decided to phone home to speak to mommy. When Paris Hilton was told by Kathy who she was talking to, Paris herself decided to make a collect call to Barbara Walters. Let the PR makeover continue.
Paris Hilton has been trying to improve her public image, one where the last picture that fans saw is of a screaming, crying Paris in the back seat of a police car (Hilton and her people really hoped that the last pictures before jail would be the glamorous ones from the MTV Movie Awards that you can check out through the gallery link on the left or that sly look she gave in her mug shot). Paris Hilton released a statement over the weekend about the lessons she has learned and reportedly said to Barbara Walters, "I would like to make a difference. God has given me this new chance."
The new chance that Paris Hilton might be referring to is her getting tossed back in jail after being released early and put on house arrest. Paris Hilton didn't know if she was coming or going last week, checking into the Lynwood Century Regional Detention Center two days early, starting her sentence on Sunday night. Then, on Thursday, Paris Hilton was reassigned to house arrest and set free. But freedom was short-lived for Paris Hilton, who was handcuffed in a Los Angeles courtroom and dragged back to jail on Friday, shouting "Mom! Mom! It's not right!"
Paris Hilton apparently told Barbara Walters on Sunday, according to Star Magazine, after a visit from her sister Nicky Hilton and former boyfriend Stavros Niarchos, "I'm not the same person I was. I used to act dumb. It was an act. I am 26 years old, and that act is no longer cute. It is not who I am, nor do I want to be that person for the young girls who looked up to me." Paris Hilton told Walters that she was a mess during that first stint in jail, saying, "I was severely depressed and felt as if I was in a cage. I was not myself. It was a horrible experience."
Paris Hilton also released a statement over the weekend, which read, in part, "I was shocked to see all of the attention devoted to the amount of time I would spend in jail for what I have done by the media, public and city officials. I would hope going forward that the public and the media would focus on "more important things.""
We all would. But, for now, Paris Hilton is still the biggest story out there and it certainly feels like Paris and the people around her are trying to change the public reputation of Hilton, one which saw people almost overjoyed that this woman was getting dragged back into jail. According to stories today, Paris Hilton has been talking about doing charity work and opening a playhouse for sick children, which may be true, but is also clearly an effort to offset stories about Hilton planning a weekend party to celebrate her house arrest.
Kathy Hilton thinks this new Paris Hilton is for real, telling Barbara Walters, according to Star, "Young people who look up to people like Paris can learn from this."
In one of the most bizarre twists in the Paris Hilton story to date - and that's saying something - the Reverend Al Sharpton has gotten involved. According to the LA Times, Sharpton is going to meet with Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca to discuss his early release of Paris Hilton before being ordered to take her back into custody. He wants to discuss the special treatment given to Paris Hilton by the system, while Baca claims that he decided to release Paris early solely because of the deterioration of her health.

June 11 (SAWF): Socialite Paris Hilton says she will drop the ‘bimbo act’ because god has given her another chance in life to do something meaningful with it.
Speaking to Barbara Walters on a collect call from jail Paris described her state of mind, her experience behind bars and how it has changed her for the good.
"'I used to act dumb. It was an act. That act is no longer cute. It is not who I am,'" Walters quoted the hotel heiress as saying when she recounted the phone call Monday on The View.
Walters said Paris sounded tired, but totally aware of what she was saying.
"I was not eating or sleeping," Paris told about her few initial days in jail. "I was severely depressed and felt as if I was in a cage. ... It was a horrible experience."
With a new lease on life Walter recounted that Paris wants to make a difference in her life and her young fans that look up to her.
“I'm not the same person I was, I know now that I can make a difference,” Walters read from her notes she took during the phone call. “God has given me this new chance I've become much more spiritual."
Walters also said Hilton was reading The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and all the fan letters she's received while she was in her room. During short breaks outside her cell, she plays ping pong, she told Walters.
Walters told Paris did not complain or cry during their conversation. And that Kathy Hilton told her that her daughter said she will never take another drink and drive.
